As I write this letter, the first inch of snow has arrived on
the ground at my home in Alaska. It is October 30th and this
is a very late date for this yearly occurrence. The weather
patterns have been changing, some for the better, some for
the worse. However, it is necessary to adapt to these changes
or else the alternative of becoming miserable from them is
inevitable. The late Ray Maesaka always told me, when someone
gives you lemons, make lemonade.
In observation of our specialty of prosthodontics, I also see
climatic change. Same day crowns, mini-residencies in
prosthodontics, and elegant advertising are becoming the norm
and challenging the comfortable economic existence of our
specialty. We must adapt to the climatic change or it will
make us miserable. The residency must adapt to these changes
in order to better prepare the future specialists. One of the
best tools we have to begin to change is the collection of
all available information. Dr. Andres will be requesting all
members to provide information on the “outcomes survey”. I
encourage everyone, especially those members of the society
who do not regularly participate in the meetings or
bulletins, to cooperate with the survey. It would be a
tremendously biased survey if only the “regulars” responded.
Hopefully, this information, after collected, will be shared
with the members.
I look forward to seeing you in Chicago. It is always a
pleasure!
Director's Corner
Jerry Andres
Well, we are now in the final weeks of my responsibilities as
President of the American Board of Prosthodontics. We have
made numerous changes to the certification examination
process over the past seven years, all designed to make the
mechanics of challenging the examination more user-friendly.
In 2006, the written examination will be administered by
computer centers available across the United States. At this
time, all three patient treatment parts may be completed
during the candidates training program. It is now possible,
with good time management and planning, to complete
certification during the same year as graduation.
Unfortunately, as in most of our lives, one crisis follows on
the heels of another. I feel this has been my personal year
of Katrinas and Ritas (and maybe Wilmas).
In the aftermath of the ABP years we are again faced with an
accreditation site visit in 2006. The standards for Advanced
Education in Prosthodontics have been revised twice since our
last visit and the self-study preparation and required
documentation of compliance with the standards has increased
significantly. We have been working at gathering
documentation for over a year. WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!! Dr.
Barco has put together a new outcomes survey, which we need a
large percentage of you to complete and return in order to
support documentation of our outcomes assessment plan.
Please do this immediately on receipt of the newsletter and
return it–IMMEDIATELY! The final draft of the self-study is
due on the Dean’s Desk by December 1st, but we will be able
to add to and revise documentation until 1 April when it is
due to the Commission on Accreditation.
Thanks in advance for your help. I know the Johnston Society
will come through for us again.
CONDOLENCES

Prior to publication of this newsletter we learned of Dr.
Dykema’s passing on November 20, 2005. More details will be
included in the next newsletter.

Boston University. We’ve added her e-mail so you can keep in
touch with her.

address, and his e-mail address. The new spelling of his name
is Kaar. His new e-mail address is in this newsletter with
all the e-mail addresses.
John Locke (Australia) saw Steve Rosenstiel (Ohio) and Enid
at the ICP meeting in Crete. What fun!
Joe Macy has accepted a hospital staff position as a
Prosthodontist. It is a hospital that treats Native Americans
exclusively. It is a full time position (4 ten hour days a
week). He will try to maintain a 1 day a week private
practice limited to only
prosthodontics. There is a teaching component to the hospital
job, which Joe is especially looking forward to doing.
Dr. Yoshiki Oshida retired from the Dental Materials Division
July 1, 2005 ending a 14-year career with Indiana University.
He joined wife Michiko in Syracuse, New York where he is
affiliated with the Syracuse University Department of
Mechanical Engineering.
Declan Thompson (England) was sorry he couldn’t make the
dinner last year and is planning on being with us this
February. We look forward to seeing him. Michael Wise also
expects to see us in February. Both men and their families
survived the London bombings intact, although a friend of
Michael’s son is missing. They expected something to happen
and now it has. Life goes on, but a little more cautiously.
Michael and family are all safe. Robert Abraham was working
in Central London at the time. He was already at work when
the bombings occurred. All of his patients for the day
managed to get to the surgery so he did not have time to
worry. The true horror of it was still sinking in when he
wrote to Marge.
Dr. Junhei Fujimoto and his son, Dr. Kohei Fjuimoto, paid a
visit to the Yokosuka Naval Base where Dr. Ray Hovijitra was
stationed. Junhei gave a lecture to the Navy dentists in the
area. Junhei’s lecture drew a large audience. He and his son
thoroughly enjoyed the exaperience of being on base.
